JAMES WEBSTER, FOUNDER

James Webster is a native of Texas who has long taken the initiative in the fight to help those who cannot help themselves. As a lifeguard with the City of Austin, he saved the lives of two drowning children. As a business owner in the field of landscaping, Texascape Designs, he lowered water usage in the Austin area by replacing high volume plants and turfgrass with native and adaptive species during the drought. He hired refugees from war-torn areas, paying high market wages to asylum seekers staying in safe houses like Casa Marianella in Austin. He believes everybody deserves a second chance, especially those who come from jilted backgrounds. As a case manager with MGA Pediatric Homecare, he recruited nurses for medically fragile children whom had just been discharged from hospitals like Dell Children’s Hospital – children with trach tubes, feeding tubes, and ventilators. He found them, interviewed them, made sure they were qualified, and then coordinated their schedules to match needs of the child. James volunteered with the American Red Cross in the wake of Hurricane  Katrina, coordinating calls between donors and those in need.

He was also enlisted to do recovery work in Bastrop in the aftermath of the great wild fires of 2011. He cleared trees, ignited prescribed fires, stacked burning piles, and grass-seeded bare earth in order to build a natural firebreak to protect people against the pursuing threats of the most destructive wildfires ever recorded in state history. James also clerked for Judge Jon Wisser of the 299th Judicial Criminal District Court, learning firsthand the legal consequences arising from restricted access to employment as well as the ensnaring nature of the penal system. As a Union Benefits Manager with American Income Life, James is currently helping veterans, nurses, firefighters, and union members better protect their families by helping them understand and access the benefits provided through their union memberships.

James is a problem solver, and the way he sees it, recidivism and workplace discrimination are huge problems that are best tackled with three undefeated weapons: strength, education, and willpower.
